Take Action:Spring 2010 Core Action Cases


Individuals At Risk

For more than 45 years, Amnesty International has come to the aid of prisoners of conscience and other individuals at risk of serious human rights violations. Thanks to the actions of Amnesty supporters like you, countless individuals have been freed from prison, saved from torture and protected from death threats. Amnesty's Campaign for Individuals at Risk provides hope and improves lives (www.amnestyusa.org).

The following are some of the Prisoners of Conscience that have made Amnesty International's Priority Case list. Please take a minute to help and take action.

China (Western Region):

Journalist Shi Tao is serving a 10 year prison sentence for sending an e-mail about government efforts to censor the media. Authorities used e-mail account information supplied by Yahoo! to convict him in April 2005.

Indonesia (Mid-Atlantic Region):

Filep Karma and Yusak Pakage are in jail for raising a flag. Police arrested them in 2004 for raising a flag used by those who support Papuan independence from Indonesia.

Mexico (Midwest Region):

In May 2006, police detained and physically and sexually abused dozens of women in the town of San Salvador Atenco. More than three years later, the women continue to seek justice. AI is pressing authorities to prosecute those responsible for these crimes.

Myanmar (Northeast Region):

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent 14 of the last 20 years in some form of detention because of her efforts to uphold human rights and democracy in Myanmar.

Take online action to help Aung San Suu Kyi by clicking HERE or write a letter to the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council by clicking HERE and following the instructions. You can also take part in a PHOTO ACTION and help AI gather at least 2,100 photos to represent the 2,100 political prisoners detained in Myanmar.
